Moment has dipped their toe in bags before with their fanny sling and rugged slings, but with Moment Travelwear (MTW) they’re cannon balling into the deep end. Travelwear is the company’s sixth Kickstarter campaign — and it is the perfect follow-up to their previous campaigns. Moment may have started as a company that makes lenses for phones, but they have evolved into a powerhouse that makes gear, develops apps, guides trips, and leads a community of creatives. It’s only natural that they want to follow all that up with gear made to work anywhere and travel everywhere.

Modern life is no longer bound to the confines of a single desk, or even a single city, but rather wherever you want to go. Moment went and made a line of bags that are the perfect accessory to the flexibility of modern work and life. Moment Travelwear is all sustainably built to last. The new line is made up of the Tote Bag, Backpack (17L or 21L), a Tech Pouch, a Battery Pouch, and a Camera Insert. The Tote and Backpack comes in three colors: Black, Olive, and Clay; and the organizers only come in Black.

I’ve been using the Olive 21L backpack with all of the organizers and camera insert for a little over 2 weeks now, and let me tell you, I love it.

I’ve been an outspoken fan of Peak Design (I own a number of their bags, straps, and their clip), but the MTW Backpack and the larger system have made me reconsider whether or not the 30L Peak Design Everyday Backpack is truly a backpack made for my everyday life. The short answer to that question is: no, it’s not. Here’s the long answer.

MTW Backpack — $179.99 ($149.99 @ Launch)

This is my new go to backpack. It is the perfect size for working on the go, but more than that — I can quickly take out what I don’t need to take with me. The backpack itself is simple. It has a built-in padded sleeve that fits up to a 16” laptop, a big bucket compartment, and a small front pocket with a mesh organizer sleeve. All of these compartments have a couple of tiny pockets to stuff a charger or hold a pen, but most of the organizing comes with the pouches. Moment’s design choices make for a better daily backpack.

The MTW Backpack has removable storage options which make it incredibly easy to take out the stuff you don’t need. Going out shooting? Slot in the camera insert and throw in the battery organizer (I love this thing, but more on that later). Going to a coffee shop (with a mask on of course) to edit or write? Pull all that out and throw in your laptop and the tech organizer with cables, dongles, SD cards, and whatever else you might need. In less than a minute you can turn your heavy camera backpack into a light work bag. Basically, it’s super easy to only take what you need with you without a lot of unpacking and re-packing.

Another huge consideration with backpacks is comfort. If you’re going to lug around 21L of stuff it’s got to be comfortable. Well, let me tell you, I’ve brought this thing with me everywhere and it’s been super comfy. And the 17L size is built for smaller frames to properly fit smaller shoulders and backs. On top of that, it truly is ready to travel everywhere with the luggage ready back panel slip through for a suitcase handle. The backpck is also easy to easy to access through both the top and the side if you swing it around your shoulder.

The MTW Backpack is rugged enough to protect all of the gear you might need to bring with you, but still looks cool enough to wear around town. It is my new favorite bag.

MTW Tech Organizer and Mini — $69.99 ($49.99 @ launch)

If you’re like me you just sort of wrap your cables up and shove them into your bag inevitably creating a rat’s nest of chargers and cords that is a problem for Future You. The Tech Organizer solves that problem. It gives you a simple place to put all of your accessories. Additionally, the Tech Organizer includes a mini organizer for when you really want to travel light.

Basically, the tech organizer is the place to pack up all the small stuff that usually bounces around the bottom of your bag. It’s easy to keep all of your cables, SSDs, power bricks, SD cards, pens, notebooks, and anything else you might need to bring with you. It’s super easy to throw the pouch in your bag and keep yourself organized. And of course it’s all padded to protect your gear. I’ve been using it to keep all my USB-C dongle, SD cards, cables, and the other stuff I need to bring with me to edit or write. Best of all you can either unzip it completely to lay flat or have it stand up on it’s own to give you easier access to everything inside.

MTW Battery Organizer — $59.99 ($39.99 @ Launch)

The battery organizer is one of those things that should have existed long ago. It is ingenious, and I hear the filmmakers at Moment are responsible for its invention. The genius of it is that it keeps your fully charged batteries separate from your empties with color coded pockets — the red zipper is for dead batteries. The real genius of the organizer is that the pocket is designed to shift volume as you use the fresh batteries. It has pockets for the batteries, chargers, and SD cards. It’s the perfect solution to keeping your batteries charged and organized.

MTW Camera Insert — $99.99 ($59.99 @ Launch)

The MTW Camera Insert helps you turn any backpack into a camera bag. Now I’ve had bags with inserts with similar promises, but those inserts weren’t exactly universal. This insert is, obviously, designed to fit perfectly inside the MTW Backpack and Tote, but can also be slotted into any normal backpack to give your gear a little extra protection. The camera insert slots into elastic hoops inside the MTW Backpack to keep it secure. The camera insert has a large side access zipper and interchangeable dividers that let you customize your setup. The insert is big enough to carry up to a Canon 5D (without a battery grip) sized camera with a 70–200mm lens with room for extras. The configurable dividers also have mesh pockets built to hold filters, SD cards, lens cleaner, or anything else you might want to keep in your kit. I personally like to to tuck the opening flap behind and secure it in my backpack so I can slip my backpack off and have easy side access. The inside of the insert is also bright red (like Moment’s Rugged Sling) — which isn’t my usual aesthetic — so nothing gets lost in your bag. I haven’t had any issue fitting my Sony A7SII with a 24–70 G Master, a 16–35 f/4.0, and some filters.

Conclusion

While you may not be able to travel far with your Moment Travelwear it’s still one of the best everyday bags on the market. Grab it at the reduced Kickstarter prices while you can, but if you miss out the bags are all still absolutely worth the money. Plus, you’ll have some brand new bags to break in when we get back to normal life. I covered a lot here, but Moment also made a great video going over every nook and cranny of all the bags.
